GLBT lending library has over 750 titles available
by Jeff Redfield
Columbus-Since its beginning in 1981, Stonewall Columbus has provided central Ohio with information and resources on gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues. But being a resource has taken many forms.
Over the years, a collection of donated books led to the beginning of a lending library. Moving into the current community center at 1160 N. High in December 1995 has allowed for the development of programs such as the lending library.
Yet, in the past six months, a wonderful increase of contributions has increased Stonewall Columbus' collection to include

over 750 titles. What used to fit on nine shelves has grown in size so that it is barely contained on 38 shelves and became the focal point of the side community room.
Volunteer Bear Barr has coordinated the project for the past year. She has put in countless hours and has developed a "gay Dewey decimal" system to help track and organize the donations. The titles are now divided into ten subject areas (à la Dewey): references, sociology, applied science, fine arts, literature, and history/geography (travel), then subdivided into topics of interests to the GLBT community.
An example would be how “sociology” is broken down into feminism/women's

of An Open Book in early October. Some contributions have come from local book stores. As duplicate titles are given, they are either set aside for the next Stonewall book-sale fundraiser or given to other GLB organizations. While shelf space is limited, more shelves will be added to accommodate the growing collection.

COLUMBUS
The name "lending library" reflects the nature of the collection, belonging to the people of our GLB community. Those wishing to browse or check out books can read in the center during open hours (Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 7 pm, Friday 10 am to 5 pm) or sign the book out for a month. The honesty system has worked well.
While there are no charges for the lending library, donations are always welcomed and would be used to help fill in any gaps. Students from local colleges and high schools have used the collection to find resources for papers and presentations and many of the titles can not be found in the public library.
The collection accrued when many titles were donated for the "Books for Bucks" sale done as a fundraiser with the assistance
While there are lots of fiction titles, additional titles are most needed in the areas of social sciences, especially for bisexuals and transgender issues. Other areas needed are gays and the law, and anything on ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. However, all titles.are welcome. As you plan a trip for the holidays or to cuddle up by the fire, stop by and grab a good book from Stonewall Columbus' lending library.
